Volunteering and commitment

In Germany, more than 30 million people volunteer to help society without pay. Whether in education, sport, refugee work or culture, volunteers take on tasks that the state alone cannot perform. Volunteering is therefore also very important for the city of Jena.

Clubs, associations, churches and recognized religious communities, foundations, initiative groups and public corporations have the opportunity to apply for funding for charitable and voluntary work.

These funds are provided by the Thuringian Volunteer Foundation and distributed by the City of Jena's Volunteer Advisory Board. The Honorary Advisory Board is appointed by the Lord Mayor for the duration of the respective legislative period of the City Council.

These funds are intended exclusively for the appreciation and promotion of voluntary work, i.e. for central and decentralizedthank-you events, for further training costs, for the promotion of voluntary work, the recruitment of new volunteers and for expense allowances.

The city of Jena thanks citizens who volunteer in a special way, for example by awarding them the Thuringian Volunteer Card. Associations, organizations and initiatives can submit proposals. The Thuringian Volunteer Card grants the recipients discounts in Jena, but also in all participating municipalities in the Free State of Thuringia.

The Volunteer Agency is a point of contact for citizens and organizations who want to get involved in civic activities or are looking for volunteers. With the help of the Engagiert in Jena platform, you can find a wide range of volunteering opportunities online.
